The Novi Public Library is proud to feature several impressive works of art, including Connie Lunski’s Life Tiles, Renee Dinauer’s Maha Maze, and the Tree of Life in memory of long-time patron Myrtle Locke. Each unique piece provides a glimpse into its creators’ craftsmanship and serves to commemorate past patrons of the library.
The Novi Public Library is proud to host an impressive collection of art, including the Life Tiles collection. Created by local artist, educator, and long-time Novi resident Connie Lunski, this unique collection consists of 1,600 ceramic tiles telling a visual story of the universe from its beginning billions of years ago to the present day. With an Art Brochure, visitors can take a walking tour of the Library’s grounds and view the 20 different displays of the Life Tiles, learning more about the artists and their work.
Donated in Memory of Long-Time Library Patron Carol Davio
The Maha Maze, generously donated by the Davio family in memory of long-time library patron Carol Davio, is an impressive multi-dimensional sculpture created by Renee Dinauer. Since 1990, Dinauer has been creating a wide variety of unique sculptures formed from steam-bent hardwood, dyed and painted, and finished with glue clamps. Her passion for constructivism – be it sculpture or architecture – as well as studying surfaces that allude to four-dimensional topological sources, are displayed prominently on the first floor of the Library, across from the café. It is a proud addition to the Library’s offerings.
In Memory of Myrtle Locke
The library is proud to commemorate the life of the beloved friend and long-time patron, Myrtle Locke, with the Tree of Life. This beautiful metal tree was donated in her memory and stands proudly in the main lobby behind the check-out desk. Myrtle was a member of the Friends of the Novi Library for over 30 years and a Library Board member from 1988-1997. The tree is a representation of the universal symbol for “life”, and serves as an inspiring reminder of Myrtle’s legacy.
Hand-Blown Glass Apples by Richard Ritter
The second floor of the Library is home to a stunning display of 16 hand-blown glass apples, created by Richard Ritter. A graduate of Northville High School and the Center of Creative Studies in Detroit, Richard has made his mark in the art world with collections showcased in the Detroit Institute of Arts and numerous other museums and galleries around the globe. This apple sculpture celebrates the City’s history of apple orchards and symbolizes knowledge – a fitting tribute to the many resources available at the Library. The Sherrill Berman Activity Room also features a delightful glass mosaic designed by local artists Dani Katsir and Gail Rosenbloom Kaplan, and expertly constructed with the help of family and friends.
Impressive Artwork at Novi Public Library
The Novi Public Library proudly features a “Reading Through Time” mural, designed and hand-painted by Michigan Artist Stacy Schwartz. This intricate mural showcases transportation through history, including stories and items of local interest, such as Novi landmarks. Upon entrance, visitors are greeted by an impressive cast bronze sculpture of three children reading on a bench, provided by the Friends of the Novi Public Library. Additionally, a stunning sculpture of “The Librarian”, created by highly respected Toledo artist Jim Havens, stands tall at the main entrance drive from 10 Mile Road.
Artwork Donated by Sylvia Aruffo’s Parents: “In Good Hands”
The Library is proud to showcase the works of art generously donated by Sylvia Aruffo’s parents, Ernest and Eva Dawn Aruffo, titled “In Good Hands”. Additionally, located in the Library’s lobby is a beautiful quilt made in partnership with MSU Tollgate and their Growing Together Event from Spring 2015. Finally, the Library also proudly displays a bronze patriotic statue on its patio in honor of Hugh and Kathy Crawford’s 50th Wedding Anniversary, designed by Randolph Rose of Yonkers, New York. This statue was gifted to the Library as part of their celebration and was purchased through donations from their guests.
In Memory of Bob Prost
Emilie Beadle created a stunning work of art titled ‘Autumn Kaleidoscope’ using a unique technique involving multiple layers of oil paint applied solely with a palette knife. The painting is a visual representation of the beauty and awe-inspiring nature of the fall season in Michigan, simplified to its most basic elements of color. This artwork was dedicated in memory of Bob Prost, an artist, and reader, honoring his passion for the arts, libraries, and family. It was unveiled on May 15, 2016.
This legacy lives on through the impressive art collections within The Novi Public Library. From the Life Tiles to the Maha Maze, and Tree of Life, the diverse works represent local artists, talented educators, and fondly remembered library patrons. As a testament to creativity and dedication, the art serves as an inspiring reminder of the important individuals who have made a lasting presence in the Novi community.
