Exploring Novi’s Historical Roots: A Journey Through the Local History Room

by | Oct 2, 2023

For those interested in Novi’s history, the Local History Room at the Novi Library is the perfect place to start. With its vast collection of books, newspapers, pamphlets, maps, photographs, and more, the Local History Room’s displays including the historical glass etchings honoring the seven local landmarks, and the Fuerst Family Farms Park’s numerous year-round activities all offer interesting opportunities for exploration and learning.

The Local History Room proudly houses a collection of materials that record the history and development of Novi Michigan, greater Oakland County, and surrounding areas as they pertain to Novi’s past boundaries. This collection includes books, newspapers on microfilm, pamphlets, maps, photographs, prints, electronic databases, and other forms of publications, as well as genealogy, local history, preservation, and oral history instruction materials. It is not available for borrowing due to its unique nature.

Local Historical Glass Etchings Display

The Novi Historical Commission is proud to present the new Historical Glass Etchings display in the Local History Room on the 2nd floor of the Library. This artwork was created by local artists, Ryan and Mindy Trainer, and includes 7 beautifully crafted historical landmarks from around Novi, such as The Methodist Church (1876), Walled Lake Park (1929), Novi Town Hall (1876), Bassett Home (1845), Novi Special (1941-1965), and the Train Station (1870). Visitors can take a look at these amazing pieces during the Local History Room’s hours: every first Monday of the month from 12 pm-2 pm, and every third Monday of the month from 6 pm-8 pm. In July and August, visits are only allowed by appointment. To view the artwork, please see a Librarian on the 2nd floor of the Library for access to the Local History Room.

A Lasting Contribution to the Novi Community

The Fuerst family has made a lasting contribution to the Novi community, having sold their property to the Novi Community Schools in 1973 with the stipulation that it be used for public purposes. In 1997, the City of Novi purchased this eight-acre property which now serves as the Fuerst Farm Park. This park is a proud testament to the Fuerst family’s generosity and commitment to the community, boasting inviting landscaping, fieldstone walls, hundreds of perennial plants, walkways, a 150-seat amphitheater that incorporates Old Township Hall, and Wi-Fi accessibility. Many programs and activities take place here year-round, offering something for everyone in the community to enjoy.
