The Art of Woodworking: Crafting Your Own Cutting Board

by | Aug 14, 2023

If you’ve ever wanted to learn the basics of woodworking, this is your chance! Join the Woodworking 101/Cutting Board class on August 16 and 23 at Rockler Woodworking and Hardware in Novi. In this two-day class, you’ll discover how to safely use various woodworking tools such as the planer, table saw, miter saw, drill press, router, and orbital sander. Plus, you’ll get hands-on experience by crafting the cutting board that you can take home and use daily. Not only will you have a new kitchen accessory, but you’ll also leave with newfound knowledge in woodworking that’ll enable you to embark on more complex projects.

Constructing the cutting board will be the primary emphasis of the first day of the workshop. Students will learn the fundamentals of woodworking as well as become familiar with the power tools that are most frequently employed. Students will become familiar with the table saw and drill press to guarantee that each piece of wood is cut to the appropriate specifications. After that, you will need to glue, sand, and form the cutting board so that it is lovely and smooth when you are through. The students will subsequently acquire the knowledge necessary to add handles to their boards using a router.

Putting the finishing touches on your cutting board will be the primary emphasis of the second day of the workshop. Sanding will be a big topic today because getting rid of any roughness or splinters in wood that could end up in your meal is essential. You will learn about the various finishes used on the board. These finishes, such as mineral oil or beeswax, will safeguard the wood and bring out the wood’s natural beauty. Additionally, students will get a fundamental understanding of sanding processes.

It’s understandable to feel nervous when handling industrial-strength tools, but at Rockler Woodworking and Hardware, we emphasize the importance of safety. Our in-person classes are led by experts with years of experience in crafting from wood. Students will receive hands-on guidance and support while learning the fundamentals of woodworking and completing their cutting board projects.

Joining the Woodworking 101/Cutting Board class allows you to immerse yourself in a new rewarding, and challenging hobby. Whether you’re interested in designing custom furniture, carving, cutting boards, or small wooden accessories, woodworking encourages creativity and requires attention to detail. This two-day class will wrap up your creative vision together with learning about creating an actual product from raw materials.

Woodworking is a craft in which you can always keep honing your skills.
